The First Watch on the Moon

In 1965, NASA needed a chronograph tough enough to strap to a spacesuit and reliable enough to trust with mission-critical timing. Rather than commission something new, they bought several off-the-shelf chronographs from local stores and ran them through a battery of tests engineers still talk about today — extreme heat, extreme cold, vacuum, vibration, and shock, well beyond anything a watch would face on Earth.
Only one watch survived every test without failure. It became standard-issue equipment for every crewed NASA mission from Gemini through the Space Shuttle program, worn on the outside of the spacesuit for EVA timing.
What's notable is how little the watch has changed since. The current production model still uses a manual-wind movement and the same 42mm asymmetric case — not because the technology hasn't advanced, but because there's been no reason to fix something that was engineered right the first time.
