The Rise of Micro-Brand Watchmaking
Trimora Editorial · April 19, 2026 · 5 min read
For most of the 20th century, watchmaking was dominated by a handful of large manufacturers with the vertical integration to produce everything in-house. Micro-brands flip that model: small teams, often fewer than ten people, designing distinctive watches around movements sourced from established Swiss and Japanese suppliers.
What they lack in manufacturing scale, they make up for in design risk. Without a decades-long back catalog to protect or a board to answer to, independent watchmakers can experiment with case shapes, dial textures, and finishing techniques that a larger house might consider too niche to justify.
The result has been a genuine renaissance in watch design over the last decade — case in point, several complications and dial techniques that started in the micro-brand space have since been adopted, in modified form, by much larger manufacturers.
